The APPLE Center has assembled a panel of five local and regional water experts who will tackle the complex terrain of California water policy and management. While addressing the spectrum of statewide water issues from water quality and supply, agriculture, energy production and ecosystem collapse, the panelists will bring it home by exploring some possible solutions to this water crisis that may reside within the Yuba and Bear River watersheds of Western Nevada County. Films on Fridays. So many amazing films, so little time – this is usually the main disappointment with festivals. This year, BriarPatch is giving you a second chance to see some of the films focused on food and agriculture.

Starting February 12 at 6:30, and continuing for seven weeks, the Patch will be showing films on Fridays in the Community Room. First up is “Nourish,” a 26 minute journey into what we eat and why we eat it. “Nourish” will help you learn where your food comes from. More information can be found at www.nourishlife.org.

February 19 brings “Tapped.” Declared the Best Documentary of the Eugene International Film Festival, “Tapped” discusses making clean drinking water a commodity. Focusing on bottled water and the industry that creates it, this film is an eye-opening experience.

BriarPatch Co-op, 290 Sierra College Drive, Suite A, Grass Valley. Keep checking back with BriarPatch’s website, www.briarpatch.coop, for more films in the upcoming weeks. 272-5333 x129

Nevada City’s main drag, Broad Street, becomes a West Coast Bourbon Street as merry spectators fill the downtown historic district for the annual Mardi Gras parade. The Sunday afternoon Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) family parade moves down Broad Street beginning at 2 p.m.   Colorfully masked and costumed characters and societies ride, march, dance and strut through an appreciative crowd, handing out beads, trinkets, bangles and more.  Everyone is encouraged to wear their own festive Mardi Gras attire.
