Jazz UP YOUR VALENTINE!
with great music, a glass of champagne and fine chocolate.
Grammy Award-winning jazz violinist Mads Tolling and quartet members Mike Abraham,
George Ban-Weiss and Eric Garland present jazz in a way that integrates the
violin into a traditional jazz combo.
Why this collaboration? As luck would have it, TCCA Artistic Director Ken
Hardin was sent on a mission by his board member Bob Stewart (a friend and
colleague of Mads’) to hear the Mads Tolling Quartet (MTQ) perform in San
Francisco. Julie Baker at The Center for the Arts had also heard of the
quartet and was interested in booking him. Hardin and Baker met to talk
about possible collaborations and the decision for the first collaboration
was made easy! .
One normally hears the violin as a classical instrument, but Mads Tolling
turns his violin into an essential ingredient in his jazz quartet. Acclaimed
Jean Luc Ponty did the same in the popular 70's jazz group
"Mahavishnu Orchestra." Says Hardin, “when I saw the MTQ perform “they
brought the house down, these guys are wonderfully sensitive, dynamic, and
responsive players performing truly great jazz. I'm really excited to have
them here"
Two-time Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling gained international renown
as a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet. As a featured soloist, his
peerless virtuosity has earned him stage time with some of the heaviest
names in jazz, including Stanley Clarke, Kenny Barron, Paquito d’Rivera, J
oe Lovano and Stefon Harris. A most exciting development is his recent step
into the limelight at the helm of the Mads Tolling Quartet. His
self-produced bandleader debut (Speed of Light, 2008) makes a strong case
for the violin’s potential to stretch the language of jazz. MTQ draws
inspiration from such artists as Herbie Hancock, Ravi Shankar and Radiohead.
Most of the music is composed and arranged by bandleader, Mads Tolling, who
was recently featured on NPR’s Morning Edition (Dec. 30)
Baker and Hardin agree "everyone will get something out of this show, it will be a memorable experience."
